The Underwood Jewellers story began in 1968. After completing his jeweller apprenticeship, Chris Underwood began operating in the shed at the back of his Grandmothers’ house in Parramatta.
After several store moves within Parramatta, today Underwood Jewellers continues to be driven by Chris’ passion for handmade diamond jewellery design and his manufacturing skill. He became a registered valuer in the 1970’s, specialising in estate pre-owned jewellery.
With over 48 years’ experience, the Underwood team has many qualified staff including gemmologists, registered valuers, designers, qualified jewellers, master craftsmen, repair specialists and diamond graders who work on the premises. The team loves designing and making jewellery using a variety of techniques including crafting by hand and CAD (computer aided design). . The staff spend time with clients – buying, selling, remodelling, designing, valuing, understanding and just chatting about stories, history and the beauty of jewellery and how it fits into their lives.
Underwood Jewellers enjoy working one on one with clients to create bespoke designed pieces that are just right with the most suitable gemstones for the individual style and budget. A great challenge is designing engagement rings that are classic, timeless and individual that will be treasured over generations.
Underwood Jewellers have years of experience with replacing jewellery that has been lost or stolen and will quote to remake, remodel, replace or start all over again.
Sometimes that precious jewellery sitting in the drawer needs to be freshened with a current look or restored to a wearable state. Underwood Jewellers can take yellow gold and, with alloying techniques, transform it into white gold of another karat. Gemstones can be set in new looks, missing gems can be matched and replaced, new settings designed and bands re-made wider, thicker or finer. A ring can be made into a pendant, a single earring melted to become part of a bangle, a brooch can be unveiled as a spectacular ring.
Along with repairs of modern jewellery, Underwood Jewellers specialises in restoring and selling pre-owned and estate jewellery, working on pieces that are as old as 250 years. Underwood Jewellers provide assessments that surprise and inform their customers with history of where and when their precious family jewellery was manufactured. Special care and expertise is required in the handling of jewellery that was manufactured many years ago.
